Istanbul officially holds 2010 ECOC title
İstanbul has officially undertaken the title “European Capital of Culture 2010” for one calendar year besides Peç of Hungary and Essen of Germany. During the ceremony hosted by Lithuanian capital Vilnius, the current capital of culture, officials gave information about newly opened Sütlüce and İstanbul Congress Centers and listed various cultural and artistic activities to be held during 2010. Maintaining a distinguished position with its historical, cultural and touristic importance, İstanbul will bear the title in the best possible fashion, said officials. The title, designated by the European Union as a showcase to depict cultural life and development, is anticipated to revive heritage and creative capacity of culture in İstanbul. The title is also viewed as a great opportunity to enhance Turkey’s image and sound its name.
